A true survivor 1968 Mustang. This must be the most original Mustang in the U.K. if not Europe. This Mustang has only covered 45,930 from new and has superb documentation with it, including the original bill of sale, original window sticker, original owners card, service book, warranty pack with envelope postmarked Feb 68, service specifications book, a guide for good drivers! This can be seen from the photographs above.
Vernon and Doris Caldwell ordered this car on the 31/12/1967 from Stockton Quincy Ford Incorporated near Beverly Hills which was located on Westwood Boulevard Los Angeles. Vernon used to work at this dealership and he and Doris decided to get one of the top specification Mustangs they could afford. As can be seen by the invoice they opted for;
The 302cc engine with the larger 4v carburettor which produces 230 bhp. This is called the J code engine and is a great engine specification.
White was obviously the colour they chose but the upgrade of the black vinyl roof was an upgrade they went for this is still the original roof, still in amazing condition.
Cruisomatic Auto gearbox and Power steering were added. Along with Power disc brakes and air conditioning. All great options for the 68 Mustang.
A radio, tinted glass, deluxe seatbelts, remote mirror and deluxe wheel covers with white wall tyres finished the job.
This set the Caldwells back $3264 a great deal of money in 1968. They must have been very proud to drive this beauty back to their home in Torrance Southern California. Vernon kept the Mustang his whole life using it sparingly having already had the use of a company car. On Vernon s passing in 1997 the Mustang was given to his son Richard. Richard placed the car in dry storage until 2015 when he decided to re-commission the Mustang changing, battery, petrol tank, re-cored the original radiator and power steering pump in order to get it running after the years in storage. Richard then moved to Palm Desert where the car sat for another 2 years. Richard was then approached by one of his neighbours Robert Worsham who wanted to buy the Beautiful Mustang which just sat in the garage, after much persuasion on the 30 November 2017 Mr Worsham became the owner. So, the Caldwells had owned the car for nearly 49 years!
We were lucky enough to get the call at our office in Arizona that Robert needed to sell, as he himself was relocating and knew we only buy the best Mustangs available. His description matched what we found which is very rare these days! We found an extraordinarily low mileage original example that we had to bring back to the UK.
Once back in our Mustang workshop in the U.K. we had the chance to view this car. The underside of the vehicle is outstanding the car has never had any rust protection, so all the original red oxide and pinch welds are present. This car has no corrosion whatsoever and is an extremely solid example. It keeps its original patina throughout, it even has its original pony floor mats. The engine burbles nicely through the twin exhausts and it drives without fault as you would expect. Steering, gear change all smooth as silk. This car has been in a time warp for 50 years and still looks and drives like the first time the Caldwells drove to Santa Monica beach on their way home in February 1968.
This Mustang will win many awards at car shows in this country especially most original survivor if you are inclined to do so. Or this car will be an amazing car to use to cruise around the West End or a European Tour. As Mustangs go this one is very understated, but at a glance, people will appreciate how classic 60 s this car is. I dare say we will not find another quite like this.
