Renault has offered us our first look at the next-generation Kangoo panel van. The all-new model will go on sale in the UK next year, sporting a range of cosmetic and technological updates which the firm hopes will keep the van competitive with the Ford Transit Connect and Mk5 Volkswagen Caddy.
Renault has used the Kangoo’s relaunch to bring its styling into step with its current range of passenger cars; the van’s headlamp units are similar to the Kadjar’s and share the same C-shaped daytime running light signature as the rest of the company’s vehicles. It’s face also has something of the Koleos SUV about it, with a similar radiator grille and lower intake.
We’re yet to see any images of the new Kangoo’s cabin, but Renault promises it’ll be all-new and “car-like.” As with the old van, it’ll be pieced together from the French firm’s passenger car parts bin, which means it’ll adopt the brand’s latest seven-inch infotainment system and 4.2-inch monitor for the analogue gauge cluster.
There’ll also be a permanent digital rear view mirror in the cabin, which Renault says will help improve visibility, as this new model will feature a bulkhead separating the cabin from the cargo area that would block the van’s rear windows. Finally, Renault will fit a host of new driver assistance systems – although the company is yet to confirm what they are.
Renault’s interior overhaul won’t stop at improving the Kangoo’s technology, though – the company says its new compact panel van will feature a pair of redesigned front seats which will offer better comfort and durability over the old model’s, along with an all-new dashboard which features several handy storage bins.

The new Kangoo will still be available in two body lengths, but it’ll be slightly bigger than the model it replaces. The outgoing standard-length model had a capacity of 3.0m3, while the old long-wheelbase variant could swallow 4.0m3. These figures have swelled to 3.3m3 and 4.2m3 respectively for the third-generation model.
We’re also yet to receive any official information on the new Kangoo’s engine range, but we expect it’ll be powered by Renault’s current line-up of 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel units. Two outputs will likely be available – a 94bhp entry-level model and a more potent 113bhp unit. Both units will send drive to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.
Renault has also confirmed that there’ll be a new pure-electric version of the Kangoo. Like the diesel line-up, specifications are yet to be confirmed, but we expect the new model will use the same electric motor and battery pack as the latest Nissan Leaf – meaning its range should increase dramatically over the current model’s 90-mile figure.
What do you make of the third-generation Kangoo? Let us know in the comments section below…
