A budget of £150 can get you a great new car, and not just a diminutive city car, as included in our list of the best cars for under £150 per month is the venerable Dacia Duster.

However, a large number of motorists looking for a new car for under £150 per month will only need a small car, and with the likes of the Toyota Aygo, Kia Picanto and Peugeot 108 all appearing on this list, they will not be disappointed.

Best new car deals 2020

The most affordable new car deals are usually PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) schemes. This means you pay a deposit followed by a set number of monthly instalments. Then, when your contract ends, you get the choice of either paying a final lump sum (and therefore taking ownership of the car), or simply handing the car back to the dealer.

Scroll down below for our list of the best new cars for under £150 per month, but before you rush to your local dealership, make sure the deal is right for you. Arrange for a test drive and ensure everybody who will drive the car is happy before putting down that deposit.

Model: Hyundai i10 1.0 67PS S

Deposit: £2,000 (£1,000 contribution)
Monthly payments: £121.92
Number of payments: 36
APR: 4.9%
Optional final payment: £3,412.31
Total to pay by customer if returning: £6,389.12
Total to pay by customer if buying: £9,801.43

Now is the time to grab an i10, because it’s being replaced by an all-new version. Hyundai claims it’s the most hi-tech city car ever, but it comes at a cost, with a starting price up by £2,000.

But it’s not like the previous model is lacking: the city car is handsome, well made and offers big-car comfort. Those short overhangs mean it’s manoeuvrable in town, and the two naturally aspirated petrol engines on offer are plenty punchy enough for use in the urban jungle.

Those small motors ensure low running costs, too. Our pick of the range is the 66bhp i10 in S trim, which sits at the foot of the price list.

Toyota Aygo - £124 per month

Model: Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i x-play
List price: £12,375
Deposit: £2,500 (£500 contribution)
Monthly payments: £123.85
Number of payments: 47
APR: 0%
Optional final payment: £3,554.08
Total to pay by customer if returning: £8,320.95
Total to pay by customer if buying: £11,875.03

Of the three city cars co-created by Toyota, Peugeot and Citroen, it’s the Aygo that looks the most striking, with a huge X-shaped graphic that frames the headlights and grille.

The design will pull in the buyers, and there’s a good range of personalisation options, but if you want more conservative looks, you might be better served by its Peugeot or Citroen siblings.

There are five trims, but we think x-play offers the best bang for your buck, with touchscreen infotainment that features a Pioneer smartphone interface and DAB radio. The 72bhp 1.0-litre engine is eager, and promises around 50mpg.

Dacia Duster - £133 per month

Model: Dacia Duster TCe 100 4x2 Access
List price: £10,995

Number of payments: 47
APR: 6.9%
Optional final payment: £4,566

Total to pay by customer if buying: £12,498

No new SUV beats the Dacia Duster for sheer value. It’s not as cheap as it once was (prices now start from £10,995), but it still offers incredible bang for your buck; this is a Nissan Qashqai-sized crossover for less than the price of a Juke.

Although the very basic Duster Access has few creature comforts, low monthly payments of just £133 make it an enticing offer that many on a budget will find too good to be true

Kia Picanto - £136 per month

Model: Kia Picanto 1.0 1
List price: £10,195
Deposit: £2,000 (£650 contribution)
Monthly payments: £136.13

Total to pay by customer if returning: £6,900.68
Total to pay by customer if buying: £10,544.49

The smallest car in Kia’s line-up is, unsurprisingly, also the most affordable. The Picanto is a great city car, and comes with plenty of kit even in entry-level ‘1’ specification.

With just a £2,000 deposit (plus a £650 contribution from Kia), you can drive away in a new Picanto for just over £136 a month. Plus, don’t forget that all-important seven-year warranty.

Peugeot 108 - £140 per month

Model: Peugeot 108 1.0 PureTech Allure 5dr
List price: £14,070
Deposit: £1,300 (£4,650 contribution)
Monthly payments: £139.54
Number of payments: 47
APR: 5.9%
Optional final payment: £3,398
Total to pay by customer if returning: £7,858.38
Total to pay by customer if buying: £11,256.38

Peugeot’s take on the city car formula is an altogether more grown-up affair than the Aygo and C1.

As with the other two, the 108 can be had with a fold-back roof, which is more like a huge canvas sunroof than a full convertible, but it offers something very different in the city car class. We think Allure trim, the second of three on offer, is the sweet spot in the range, coming with electric door mirrors, a rear camera, alloys and auto lights on the spec list.

The car has the same engine as the C1 and Aygo, with auto gearboxes available only on five-door models. Three-door cars are limited to Active and Allure trims.
