Almost 50 years after the 1968 390 Ford Mustang GT was last seen chasing a black 1968 Charger R/T through the hills of San Francisco, it was unearthed in a junkyard in Mexico, according to Fox News. Car enthusiast Hugo Sanchez found the car, repainted white, rusting in a lot in Baja California Sur last year. He was planning to turn the dilapidated Mustang into a replica of "Eleanor" from the Nicolas Cage movie Gone In 60 Seconds.
However, when he sent off its identification numbers to Marti Auto Works to check its history, he was shocked to discover that it was one of two Mustangs purchased by Warner Bros for the hit movie Bullitt and was used for all of the stunts.
The second car was not abused and was later preserved and sold three times over. Until this find, the other vehicle was considered lost. McQueen even tried to buy one of the Mustangs back from Warner Bros after filming, but was unsuccessful.
