The 5th generation Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 set the bar for road handling muscle cars in the modern era. The 5th gen Z28 and the 6th gen cars are more than capable on the German Nurburgring. But, it was the ZL1 that put the European automakers on notice that an American muscle car can turn with the best of them. This meant that the Camaro ZL1 was a formidable foe for many European performance cars on a road course. However, the supercharged Chevy is still very good at what muscle cars do best drag racing. This video shows the difference when the 5th gen Camaro goes head to head with a 2016 Porsche 911 in a straight line.We know the details of the 5th gen Camaro ZL1 a 580 horsepower LSA V8, rear-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual transmission but the details on the Porsche are a bit sketchy. The 911 doesn"t do a burnout, so we can guess that it is an AWD model. The resulting quarter mile time suggests that it is the more powerful "S" model with 420 horsepower. On paper, it seems like the 580hp Camaro ZL1 should have no problem with the 420hp Porsche, but not so fast. The advantage of a quick shifting automatic transmission and all-wheel drive might even out that power advantage a bit. In fact, it does even out the advantage a bit, but not quite enough. When the race begins, the Porsche driver is slow to leave the line, giving the Camaro a big early lead. The 911 does a good job of getting down the track, but the German sports car can"t catch up to the American muscle car. The 911 runs a 12.33 at 113 to the ZL1"s 12.11 at 114.Tags: 5th Gen Camaro, 5th gen Camaro ZL1, 911, Camaro ZL1, drag race monday, LSA, Porsche, Turbo, ZL1
