You may have heard of the Cannonball Run. A crazy race in the 70's from New York to Los Angeles. You might have even caught the movie The Cannonball Run (1981) which is today a cult classic. The mind behind the race in the 70's and the movie is none other than Brock Yates. He has a rich history in the motorsports industry I highly suggest googling him to read about his fascinating career as a journalist, author, reporter, and much more (really too much to list to be honest). Just over 30 years ago his son Brock Yates Jr. brought the Cannonball Run back to the streets of the United States but in let's say a more legal manor (sort of) which is now known as the One Lap Of America.
What is the One Lap Of America? Imagine building a car worthy of road racing, auto crossing, drag racing, on one set of tires, over an 8 day period, at 17 events, rain or shine, for 3,500 miles, with yourself and one other person in the car. Pack that car with every supply you will need for the 8 days like clothes, spare parts, tools, electronics, and maybe even some food. Imagine being at a track at 630 am, unloading everything out of the car, racing all day which starts at 830am, turning wrenches if you need repairs, loading the gear back in the car, and then driving 8 to 10 hours to the next location. Arriving at maybe 1 or 2 am, sleeping until 5 or 530am, and then repeating it all over again. That my friends is the Brock Yates Jr. One Lap Of America. Oh and don't think you are going to sleep in the car while in transit. Let's just say the speed you typically are driving on that transit requires a full time navigator.
Brenspeed & Gas Monkey Garage did this just a few weeks ago. Brent & Big Chris Smith took the wheel of a Brenspeed built 2015 Mustang and set out for 8 days to put on a big show for the fans & racers in the One Lap. They started in Indiana and ended up out near Boston, then headed south through Virginia and found themselves in Kentucky. They headed back north up into Wisconsin and ended up back in Indiana 17 events later, 8 days later, and finished FIRST PLACE in their class.
Brenspeed Blo has the entire event documented day to day. We posted on this blog each night after we reached the hotel and told the tales of our day and how we were doing. GIVE IT A READ it is very interesting from closing an airport for testing to police to wins we pretty much posted as much as possible.
A special thanks to our supporters: The team at Brenspeed, Gas Monkey Garage, Continental Tires, Roush Performance, Kooks Exhaust, Mcleod Clutch, Lucas Oil, Tru7, Auto Park Ford, 360 Wraps, American Car Magazine UK, Collins Bros Jeep, Kedan Logistics, Triumph Games, Tire Rack, Brock Yates Jr., the staff of the One Lap Of America, and our family's for putting up with us and our craziness.
Check out the blog it has a lot of good information on this event. If you have 8 free days next year, time to build a car, and then a few days to recover I highly suggest doing this. Brenspeed Blo

The Cannonball still goes on today, although more commonly called Gumball.
Richard Rawlings (Gas Monkey) and his buddy Dennis were the record holders for a few years until recently.
There is even a euro version, my old '78 Firebird got tagged for it whilst at Shakespeare Raceway a few years ago.

Look up a 2003 movie called Gumball or Gumball 3000, something like that. It follows the exploits of the racers from San Franciso to Miami, and surprisingly many of them are wealthy Brits who have their cars shipped over.
Its narrated by Burt Reynolds, and well worth a watch.
