We"re not entirely sure what kind of illicit substance Renault"s engineers were on" in 1998, when they first unveiled the Phase One Clio V6. Something quite strong, we"re guessing. The V6 arrived in the UK in 2001, with the 3.0-litre V6 from the Laguna sitting pretty where once your shopping might"ve in the middle. It had massive arches to accommodate a much wider track, a couple of air dams and a proper exhaust. Functional, yes, but also a nod to R5 Turbos of old.The body and engineering work was outsourced to TWR in Sweden, who built 12 a day until Renault facelifted the Clio and brought production in-house, to the big Renaultsport facility in Dieppe. And it was with that 2003 facelift that the Clio V6 got a bit friendlier.See, the Phase One was a bit of a handful, to put it lightly what with the stubby wheelbase. The Phase Two cured some of the One"s dynamic ills, and upped power from 230bhp to 255. The 0-60mph time fell from 6.2secs to 5.5, and the top speed rose from 147 to 153. And apart from being better to drive but still, and we can"t stress this enough, a thing to be taken very seriously it looked better too. It"s the one we"d have, though both are pretty collectible nowadays. You could find Phase Ones for less than 10K just four or five years ago. Now, the cheapest we can find online hover around twice that, while tidy Phase Twos go for 25k up. Now, on to our Classified Ad of The DayIt"s a 2005 Clio II V6, in black, with just 36K from new and a special exhaust to make it even more exciting (not that anything is required). The price is 25,000. It"s an all-time classic of hot-hatchery, and we applaud Renault for having the gall to build such a thing in the first place. Now, lets hope the soon-to-be-revealed, and we"re told very special, Clio RS lives up to the V6"s madcap legacy.
