Above is a new COPO Camaro drag car participating in the Flugplatzblasen event in Germany. Note the sixth-gen body shell versus the older fifth-gen COPO cars. The Flugplatzblasen is a drag racing event held on an air field in Elchingen, Germany. So, while it isn"t technically what Americans would call a "no-prep drag race event," this is really just a bunch of gearheads in Germany, getting together to do a little drag racing on an empty airport runway.Of course, the issue with running on an airport runway is that it lacks the smooth and sticky surface of a proper drag strip. So, let’s see what happens when a new Chevrolet Camaro COPO drag car goes racing on an unprepped surface. We can see from the graphics on the side of the car that this COPO Camaro has the supercharged 350 cubic inch engine option. In the right conditions and with proper tuning this is a legitimate 8-second car. 8.50s are common for the NHRA stock-based class in which the Camaro COPO, Mustang Cobra Jet and Challenger Drag Pak compete. So in short, this COPO car is one of the quickest muscle cars to ever come from the factoryand it is racing here on an unprepped airstrip. On the first run, the COPO Camaro takes on an all-wheel drive Porsche and, not surprisingly, the Chevy has traction issues while the AWD Porsche jumps out to a huge early lead. The Camaro comes charging back on the big end, but not quickly enough to take the win.On the second run, the COPO Camaro takes on a 2005-2006 Ford GT in a classic battle between an two American icons. Even while the Camaro is smoking the tires after launch, it pulls away from the Ford GT. Eventually the COPO hooks and hands out a serious whoopin".Finally, the COPO Camaro takes on what looks to be a C7 Corvette Z06. While traction is once again an issue, the supercharged Camaro jumps out to an early lead on the supercharged Corvette, and the driver turns that into a narrow win.Crank up your speakers and enjoy watching a COPO Camaro blast down a German airstrip.Tags: camaro, Copo, COPO Camaro, drag race monday, Drag Racing
