De-cating Gen 4 Camaro

As well as being vandalised, it looks as though the Camaro is now going to need a new catalytic convertor, which could prove expensive. One thought I had was to de-cat it and to get a bespoke stainless system built which should improve performance and also the way it sounds. Is this possible without massive expense and effecting how the engine performs? It's a 3.4 V6. Also, is there anywhere local to Portsmouth that could do it? Thanks in advance.

O2 simulators might allow you to de-cat the car. They provide the PCM with values that are in-line with expectations of a working cat.
They are quite common on LS cars but I don’t know about V6’s.
When did the vandalism occur? I don’t remember you mentioning that?
Any chance of nearby CCTV to catch them?

Thanks for that. The vandalism has just occurred in the last few days. It wasn't there last week when I drove it around the block, but when I went to take it for its MoT yesterday I noticed it had been s scratched in two places right through all layers of paint. ? Not sure about the CCTV, I'll hVe a look.

Is the exhaust still there? , you hear of catalytic converters being stolen off cars just do they can make a few quid.

I drove it to Waterlooville and it didn't sound any different. I didn't think to check. It's also developed a fault with warm starting, seems fine from cold but when it's warm it doesn't seem to want to turn over at first. Could that be related?

Just spoken to the MoT place and it has passed on emissions so the Cat can't be that bad but needs new pads and discs all round! ? I guess Rock Auto or Real Steel are going to be the best places?

I’ve had a look and can’t see 02 sims for the V6.
You will need to get someone to tune it out or replace the cat with something aftermarket.
I honestly think an aftermarket cat is the way to go and undoubtedly cheaper than a SS system.

Rockauto for brakes shipping not bad anyone got the discount code? Rockauto do performance disc and pads much cheaper than ebc.

I got my drilled/slotted discs and pads from Rock auto. It's likely the same fits yours. They seems good. Price of item with shipping was pretty darn good from memory.

Sorry to hear of the vandalism. F***ing scumbags!! Can't your cat be cleaned? I have read they can sometimes be removed and soaked in paint thinners. Not sure how successful it is.
Indeed cats do frequently get stolen! One of my sons lives in London. He called me while back back to say his Civic exhaust was blowing. When I looked under the car someone had hacksawed most of the way through the exhaust just after the cat! I assumed they must have been disturbed and made off. I just welded it back together. Has been fine since.

As for the cats the rear o2's just check the cats performance. They don't pack up as often as thr ones before the cats but perhaps they are due for renewal. I don't know what ones you use. I have bosch13111's in mine. The main difference between o2's before and after the cat is the length of cable.

No, the brakes are different from 93-97 vs 98-02.
Front disks are likely the same but pads are not. Rears I don’t think are interchangeable at all.

Here is a code fo Rock Auto - good until 9th August 2020

The 3.4L is a single cat and I’m fairly sure doesn’t use the same 4 wire sensors as the LS. They are likely the same before and after the cat but i don’t think they interchange.
The 3.8L is much more likely to be similar.

I’ve just checked Rockauto and the O2 sensor is the old single wire version. I would like to bet there is only one sensor and it’s upstream of the cat.
Not sure what conditions trigger the warning light in that configuration but a single wire O2 sensor is less than a tenner and probably worth replacing to see if it turns the light out.

If its single wire it must be getting an earth path through the exhaust. Perhaps check the exhaust has a good earth to the block.

The exhaust grounds through the engine block and a badly grounded engine block would likely show up as ignition issues. Perhaps this explains the hard warm start?

Thank you everyone for their helpful advice once again. It's one of the things that makes the Renegades such a great community. ?? Looking at Rock Auto, the cost of the replacement discs and pads isn't as much is I'd thought, and that's without the discount code an88fiero kindly posted. I'll discuss the suggestions about the cat with the garage today. Thank you all once again. ?
