Fiero Rebuild

A couple of years ago the old Fiero was running quite poorly, especially when the EGR opened at cruise speeds.
A compression test revealed two cylinders, one on each bank were low so a top-end tear down began, hoping that it wouldn't end in a bottom end tear down too.
Fortunately, once the valve seats had been re-ground the Fiero was purring again.
The photos were originally taken as a memory aid - 80's American cars have masses of plumbing and vacuum hoses - but we ended up keeping a record of the entire job.

Oh I remember that well :)

Especially lapping in the valves! Ouch ;)

wow, nice photos, yeah I know waht you mean about the plumbings. Soo many vacumm hoses. The engine reminds me of the 2.8 I had in my 89 Firebird, the intake manifold looks the same, apart from having Fiero on it. Brings back many memories for me too. I also had trouble with the EGR.
Did you regrind the valves seats yourselves?

Yes, each valve seat by hand.
The EGR worked fine but when the conditions for its operation were met and the valve opened the car would always misfire.
As its ODBI disconnecting it didn't set any lights or codes and it runs much better.
It generally needed the refresh, although it hasn't done many miles from new, things like the valve stem seals were brittle and not sealing correctly.

Shame the budget didn't stretch to headers, but they are ??????
