If you"ve ever fancied a film star but been put off by the prima donna attitudes, the dodgy habits and terrifying expense, look no further. This truck was on hire last year to the people making the new Kingsman film, so should be visible there when the film is released in July. Unlike human film stars, she is always there for you, always eager to go, always willing and co-operative, and doesn"t cost the earth to run because she doesn"t go to Tiffany"s or Gucchi for all the little extras. Ford made more of these trucks than any other model and parts are both readily available and affordable.

Built in Kansas in March 1977 and bought by a dealer in Dallas, the truck reached the UK in 1987. At that time it had the original 400 cubic inch (6.6 litre) V8. Sadly - unless you have to buy the fuel - that engine was changed some years ago and she now runs the best engine Ford ever built, the 300 cu ins (4.9 litre) straight six, mated to Ford"s own 3-speed auto box. They built this engine from 1945 to 1995 and it was used in trucks, dumper trucks, stationary engines, pumps, generators, tractors etc etc and is widely regarded as virtually unbreakable. No land speed records but it will thump along happily all day and pull absolutely anything.

I bought the truck last year. Always wanted one and now we"ve sorted everything she"s an absolute delight to own. Problem is that it"s so big I can"t get down our narrow Welsh country lanes without scratching the paintwork and can"t get to some of the tight places I need to reach, like farm yards and tight gateways off those narrow lanes. So I"m going back to a Land Rover.

Everything is in good order and everything works as it should. When sorting the electrics I fitted a new heavy duty battery and we found a set of air horns underneath which, with a wire attached, now play Dixie when you press the horn button. Wonderful - but there"s a change-over switch so you can use the ordinary horn in sensitive areas. The grandchildren think they"ve died and gone to heaven and their faces are a picture when I let them blow Dixie. The Showman"s Lights on the top also work.

On a more practical note, the buck is big enough to take two pallets.

The brakes have had new shoes (rear) and new pads (front) and I have a new vacuum booster ready to be fitted so the old girl will soon have power brakes again, to go with the power steering.

Everything is good but if you have any questions or want to come to Ruabon to have a look, please get in touch.
