Firebird Headlight gears

Some time ago I recall having an issue on my 3rd gen where the headlight motor would keep running for some time. I remember buying new brass gears for it. I have one left in my drawer at work.

However after reading up what they are, it turned out its for the 4th Gen. I was going to put them in the for sale section, but going to keep it now as I may need it when mine fails.

What happens is there is a worm gear in the motor that mates with this goc. The motor only cuts off when enough current is sensed from the load of it coming to the end stop. However eventually the nylon gear's teeth wear, and get stripped.

So the brass gear is certainly a better idea. I took photos as I was going to sell it, but I may need it.

So if any of you do have trouble with your headlight motors on your Firebird then check out this link:- 4th Generation Headlight Fix

I have one of those gears left over from my Firehawk. The repair kit is actually from a Fiero site but as we know fits 3rd and 4th gen Firebirds, also in a lot of cases you can turn the plastic gear 180 degrees since the worm gear only uses half of the cog.:thumb:

I was sure I bought it for the 3rd Gen and its been sitting in my drawer at work. At the time I had both 3rd and 4th. So wasn't sure what it fitted, thats handy to know it fits both. Also handy to know just rotating it 180 sorts the issue too.

I'll keep it safe, back in the same drawer, ready for when I need to hunt for it.

A job I never had to do on my 4th gen or Clare's 3rd gen. Did one for a freind though. Corvettes are known to have simliar issues.
