This is where it all began and this car is an interesting and authentic example of the very first Mustang.

Mustangdecoder.com shows that this car was built in Dearborn, MI where Mustang production began but was shipped to San Jose, California. It also ties out the details of the car:

Engine: D-Code 289 cubic inches (4.7 litre) 4 barrel carb V8

Colour: Wimbledon White

Interior: Red Crinkle Vinyl

Date: June 5, 1964

Transmission: 4 speed manual

The car stayed in California during its US history and had only two recorded owners; the last was in Newbury Park, CA. The last owner restored the car in 1988. The car was then subsequently bought and shipped to the UK in 1990 where it was auctioned, the auction records show that it had been totally restored and the engine rebuilt, balanced and blue printed some 7,000 miles ago the recorded mileage at this time was 59,000 miles.

The auction notes also state the factory options of: AMPB radio, D engine, 4 speed manual gear box, tinted glass, full console, bumper guards .. .

The car was bought at this auction and owned for the next 24 years by that buyer. The MOT records show that the mileage of the car between 1990 and 2014 was only 192 miles. The car was merely a collectors item and driven for an MOT each year. It never saw the rain during this time.

The car was then bought by the second UK owner in 2014, an acquaintance of the first, who corroborates this story. This second owner re-commissioned the car and put 1,000 miles on it from 2014 2015, again as part of a collection and only dry weather use.

I bought the car in 2015. I took it to Mike at Modurstang.co.uk who gave it good check over and a little fettling, including a new clutch. I also installed a new windscreen, correct factory spec and tint, as the original was quite hazy. I have put approximately 1,900 dry weather miles on the car and it has been kept garaged by all three UK owners. This car was a California car and has not seen the rain since it was restored and shipped to the UK in 1990.

This history has a profound effect on the look and feel of the car. Needless to say it is ultra clean and solid. But the fact that it was restored so long ago (28 years ago) but never subjected to any significant use or weather has resulted in a very special car. It doesn t look like a tired, older restoration, nor does it look like a just-out-the-spray-booth new resto. It has the feel of a very authentic car, almost unrestored yet in much better shape than any survivor car. The car also has all of the associated original 1964 differences and correct and original drivetrain components. There have been no modifications or bling added.

The car therefore isn t absolutely perfect, but it is a very high quality car, super clean, very attractive and drives and stops well (4 speed manual, no power steering or brake servo, drums all round) and has a character that it probably didn t have post-restoration.

(Also, I have just put 5 new tyres on the car Hankook for Euro spec grip but with the white band as per the look of the original US tyres).

I live in Ireland but work in the UK, the car has been kept at my house in the UK as an occasional toy when I m here for a weekend and the weather s good. I am spending less time in the UK going forward, hence the sale.

The car can be viewed in South Leicestershire. It has an MOT until March 2017.
