Ford recalling 2020 Explorer for fire risk

The motoring press make a big deal out of things like this, but with cars being so complex these days I would say they are virtually impossible to completely avoid.
At least car companies do recall cars now. I remember reading of a case where an American car manufacturer (and shame on me for not remembering which one), who apparently compared the cost of the recall to the cost of being sued by the families of those injured or killed as a result of the fault. They left the cars as they were because it was the cheaper option!!
Anyone else hear of that or recall which car company it was?
