We love a good restomod as much as the next guy, but these mashups of old and new present one big dilemma. That is, they’re often too beautiful (and expensive) to drive much. Which doesn’t really make sense when you think about it. After all, the entire point of building a best of modern/vintage ride like this classic Trans Am is to make it the ultimate driving machine. One that combines stunning looks with a killer, reliable powertrain. So why wouldn’t you use it as such?Still, the show queen restomod problem rages on. Except in the case of this stunning, Detroit Speed-built Trans Am owned by a dude named S.W. He made the mistake of bringing his show worthy creation by Hoonigan’s “top secret” Austin, Texas location, dubbed the Donut Hangar. And what follows is pretty much what you’d expect. A big time shred session that leaves this old Firebird’s tires in shambles. But isn’t that what it was designed to do in the first place? Goodies like a custom subframe, four-link rear suspension, and 678 hp LS7 just beg to be used. The details, on the other hand, are not. Every nut and bolt is new, every inch of paint perfect. It’s the kind of car that most people would keep stored away in a highly secured garage. Not roll out to some construction site and beat the crap out of.Then again, you only live once, right? Thus, S.W. hops behind the wheel and proceeds to rip off some impressive smokey donuts that would make some folks cringe. We, however, approve of this hoonage. We just hope he keeps it a little further away from the fence next time!Join the LS1tech forums today!Tags: detroit speed, Firebird, Hoonigans, Pontiac, Trans Am, Video
