Exactly 70 years ago today, the very first Land Rover made its debut at the Amsterdam Motor Show.Since the post-war 4x4 rolled onto stage (having been knocked up after a doodle on a beach in Anglesey), the brand has struggled through the impossible terrain of recessions, fuel crises, appalling reliability problems, the demise of the UK motor industry, an American buy-out and, more recently, an Indian takeover to emerge on the other side, still the maker of the world"s best 4x4s selling over seven million vehicles in the process.Instead of blowing 70 candles out on a big Defender birthday cake, to celebrate its 70th, Land Rover has decided to hold a live stream at 20:00 BST on its YouTube channel in honour of World Land Rover day. Some of LR"s greatest hits will be at the 4x4 specialist"s Solihull HQ and will feature HUE, the first prototype Land Rover, along with the original two-door Range Rover, Discovery, various expedition cars and all its flashy modern stuff. To whet your appetite, we"ve trawled the LR archives and found 70 of its coolest, weirdest and wackiest cars. There"s everything from cars that crossed the Darien gap, have got tank tracks, big wheels, little wheels, outboard motors, electric motors, armoured body panels, trick paint, no paint, fire hoses, lights, canoes pretty much anything and everything you can think of. So scroll down and tell us what"s your favourite below.
