The Chevrolet Camaro official went on sale on September 29th, 1966 50 years ago today. This means that right now, 50 years ago, someone watching television might have seen the first ever Camaro commercial.This first Camaro commercial showed the groundbreaking muscle car rising from a Volcano as the narrator ran through all of the key features of this new competitor to the Ford Mustang. I imagine that back then, having a car rise out of a volcano required fairly high tech special effects, although by today"s standards, it is a little cheesey. Also, unlike modern commercials which are reserved to 30 or 60 second segments, this commercial is a full 2 minutes long.However, keep in mind that this was the first ever commercial for the Chevrolet Camaro a commercial which helped sell almost 221,000 muscle cars (pony cars back then) that first year. For many Americans, this commercial would have been the first time seeing the new Camaro, and imagine how exciting that would have been back then being a 16yo gearhead seeing the new GM muscle car rise from a volcano.This was the spot that led to many, many great Camaro commercials, so crank up your speakers and enjoy!Tags: 1st Gen Camaro, camaro, throwback thursday
