It wasn’t that long ago that no one would ever imagine a four-wheel drive pickup being anything that resembles fast. These were trucks that folks would throw a lift kit on and head to the local trails. Not the local drag strip. But these days, even trucks are getting pretty darn quick. We’ve seen plenty of lightly tuned, showroom fresh pickups running some pretty impressive times. But none, however, are anywhere near as fast as this amazing GMC Sierra. The regular cab, short bed, four-wheel drive pickup sure doesn’t look like much. Well, save for those 12-inch wide tires out back. But pop the hood, and you’ll quickly realize that this thing is dead serious. It’s there that you’ll find a 376-inch LSX block topped off with a pair of 76mm turbos. That’s “about all” it takes to lay down 1,280 horsepower on the dyno at 21 pounds of boost, according to the owner.Which is pretty amazing when you consider the fact that this GMC Sierra recently recorded an 8.60 second pass at 160 mph. Beating the previous four-wheel drive pickup record by a couple tenths. That’s rather impressive given the (relatively) mild dyno figures, though the owner admits they did crank up the boost a little at the track. Or maybe he’s just sandbagging. But then again, it sure does hook with zero drama on the track. Which is the beauty of four-wheel drive and a little weight, we suppose. Going up against a hilarious 4-71 blown, 4.3-liter V6-powered Chevy LUV, he lays down a pretty easy (and fast looking) pass. Well, except for a little drift mid-track. But that’s no-prep for you! Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to shop for a nice, used 4×4 pickup!Join the LS1tech forums today!Tags: Drag Racing, Four-Wheel Drive, GMC, LSX, racing, Sierra, Video
