The new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has been accidentally revealed, a week ahead of its scheduled debut on the 15 July. The German brand released the supercar’s launch video on YouTube, unveiling its exterior styling in full.

When the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series goes on sale later this year, it will be the most extreme road going version of the car to date, drawing inspiration from the Mercedes-AMG GT GT3 race car.

Cosmetically, the Black Series will feature the same tweaks as the racecar, including a huge rear diffuser, a braced front splitter, a vented bonnet, wider wheel arches and an enormous, manually adjustable rear wing. To help the engine breathe better, Mercedes-AMG has also fitted a larger-bore, quad-exit exhaust system.

Chassis upgrades for the GT Black Series will be extensive. From what we can glean from these latest images, it’ll feature a lowered suspension system, stiffer springs and larger diameter drilled disc brakes, with six-piston calipers up front and four-piston units at the rear.

The car’s suspension geometry will also be changed, with more negative camber up front, which should make the car turn in more keenly. Finally, to take advantage of the uprated chassis, the finished car will also receive a set of wider alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

It’ll be powered by a heavily retuned version of the GT’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, which will likely feature forged internals, new camshafts and an improved engine management system. To complement the freer-flowing exhaust, the GT Black Series should also feature a pair of upgraded turbochargers and a less restrictive intake manifold.

All these upgrades mean that the Black Series’s power output should climb to well over 600bhp, which is a substantial increase over the current GT flagship, the 573bhp GT R Pro. Torque should also show an increase over the Pro’s 700Nm figure.

Mercedes-AMG’s leaked video didn’t show much of the GT Black Series’s interior, but we expect it will be largely similar to the AMG GT R Pro’s, with a pair of heavily bolstered, carbon-fibre-backed bucket seats and a sports steering wheel. As with the GT R Pro, Mercedes-AMG’s track package could also be offered as an optional extra, adding a full roll-cage, a safety harness and a fire extinguisher.

As is traditional with Mercedes Black Series models, this highly-tuned AMG GT is likely to mark the end of the coupe’s lifespan. We expect it will remain in production until 2022 before being replaced by an-all new model.
