We know unusual when we see it, and this is about as cool and different as it gets a 1930 Nash
Model 488 Twin Ignition Six Seven Passenger Phaeton
Thats quite a name, but its fitting for such a magnificent car. You want rare? There are two known to exist, and the other is in Sweden in pieces. Completely restored, captivating, interesting and stately this car is ready for the show circuit or museum duty.
You often wonder what happens to worn down project cars you see at swap meets, and with this car its a happy ending. Picked up as a complete, but tired car at the AACA meet in Hershey 15 years ago, the car was brought home to Northeast Ohio for a full restoration. While the bulk of the work was performed at a workshop especially built for the restoration, some top shelf suppliers were used to handle the components. The motor was sent to Martin Automotive for a refresh and rebuild, Midland handled the radiator, North Coast Upholstery handled the convertible top and side curtains, Dasons restored the interior upholstery, Great Lakes Glass fabricated new windows, Custom Electric rebuilt the starter and Custom Clutch rebuilt the driveshaft. Garys Paint Works in Eastlake restored the wheels and handled the bodywork while a total of 63 pieces of bright work were refinished by the experts at Custom Chrome in Grafton. This grand car was finished in 1998, travels little, but wins consistently when its shown!
Open the passenger side hood hatch and find the restored compartment holding the 275ci Twin Ignition six cylinder engine. There are a pair of correct ignition coils mounted to the firewall sending spark to the 12 post distributor with dual points. Each set of points energizes its own Autolite coil, and the increased spark energy makes for a smoother engine with 85 horsepowerthats a heady figure for 1930! New and correct spark plug wires ride in their original looms while the rebuilt starter sits below. Open the driver hatch and find the rebuilt carburetor, fuel filter, vacuum canister and an original oil can in its mount. All is correct and in excellent mechanical order.
The undercarriage was restored mechanically and cosmetically to a better than new standard. Newbury Sandblasting and Plating gently removed years of grime and scale before Cumberland Gray was applied. The front and rear suspensions were disassembled, checked for wear and refinished. The exhaust shows surface rust is it should due to its mild steel construction. The brakes, clutch and steering are all in fine working order. After all, what good is convertible on a summer day if it doesn t run? This car runs like new.
The completely reworked interior is gorgeous from one end to the other. The Phaeton body style refers to vehicles which have cavernous rear seat areas while the front seats are separated off these were cars which were frequently used as limousines. The controls for the driver are all within reach from the shifter to the ignition key to the steering wheel mounted control levers. The rear seat is cavernous with a pair of jump seats which pop out of the floor for additional capacity. The upholstery and carpeting are in excellent condition and are made from period correct grains and materials.
The body of the car oozes class and sophistication. The classic white and gray color combination is the restorers choosing, and looks fantastic. Color combinations varied greatly at Nash & in fact, the 1930 brochure showing each model clearly states The Nash Motors Company reserves the option of making frequent color changes! Guy Graphics handled the pin striping while dual side mounts and auxiliary driving lights and auxiliary horns from Don Sommer add even more grandeur. The running boards feature restored steps and new mats while new 6.00 19 tires surround the restored wheels. Plexiglas wing windows and mounts from Jay Fisher complete the stunning look.
We have a number of original Nash books which go with the car, as well as restoration receipts, aftermarket catalogs (including one featuring the car on the cover) and other paperwork. There are pictures of the car before and during its restoration which are always good to have. When completed, this Nash even spent time in the prestigious Gasoline Alley museum in Casa Grande, AZ!
Excellent styling, fine workmanship, and good performance are the factors that make the 1930 Nash a collectible automobile today. These are also the reasons Nash managed to show a profit in a depressed 1930 while other independent manufacturers were struggling to survive. It was a landmark year for Nash, and classic appearance made its cars real contenders in the American market, and one look at this car lets you know why. If you are looking for a unique and rare car for a significant pre-war collection, it doesnt get any rarer than only one in the United States. This 1930 Nash Model 488 Twin Ignition Six is as rare as they come!
