UK prices and specifications for the new Cupra Formentor performance crossover have been revealed, with orders for the 306bhp 2.0-litre turbo version starting now.
The list price kicks off at £39,830 for the Formentor in VZ2 specification. Drive is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, while standard equipment includes 10.25-inch digital instruments, a 12-inch central infotainment system, black nappa leather heated bucket seats, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, a smattering of driver assistance and safety features including high beam assist and adaptive cruise control, sports suspension with adaptive dampers and 19-inch wheels.
The Formentor VZ3 and VZ Edition models are priced from £42,200 and £43,840 respectively. VZ3 builds on VZ2 with copper and black 19-inch wheels and uprated brakes from Brembo, While VZ Edition versions of the Formentor add a panoramic glass sunroof.
Cupra will expand the line-up early next year with the introduction of a 1.4-litre 242bhp plug-in hybrid version of the Formentor; the brand has also confirmed that less potent engines lifted directly from the regular SEAT line-up will also feature.
Cupra says that the starting price of the Formentor will eventually come down to around £27,300 with the arrival of the entry level 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol model, with 148bhp and a six-speed manual gearbox. A 2.0-litre petrol model with 187bhp is also planned.

These cars will be available in trims called V1, V2 and VZ1, with entry level versions still receiving digital instruments and a full size 12-inch central infotainment system with navigation, LED headlights and taillights, sports seats, rear parking sensors, three-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control and assistance features such as lane keep assist and forward collision warning.
Cupra officials always hinted that the production Formentor’s styling would remain faithful to the concept version that was revealed at last year’s Geneva Motor Show. Indeed, save for some subtle colour changes - the fins in the front bumper are black rather than body coloured, and the alloy wheels now have copper-coloured detailing - the two cars are pretty much identical.
Measuring 4,450mm long and 1,511mm tall, the Formentor is 87mm longer and 104mm lower than the Ateca, lending it a sportier, coupe SUV-like appearance, while more flamboyant creases around the wheel arches give a more dramatic look. At the rear, there’s a full width light bar - a feature also seen on the Cupra Leon.
The Leon also lends its dashboard design to the Formentor, too. Copper highlights are dotted around the interior and can be found on the stitching on the seat and the door trim, air vent surrounds and steering wheel.

The dash is topped off with a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The display features customisable homepage functions, while touch-sensitive controls for the climate functions sit on a small ridge just below. As standard the infotainment system gets both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay - the latter is able to connect wirelessly. It’s complemented by a digital instrument panel ahead of the driver.
Like other parts of the Formentor, the two powertrain options are also borrowed from the Leon range. The first is a plug-in hybrid model that pairs a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor that develops 242bhp and 400Nm of torque. A 13kWh battery allows the Formentor to cover 31 miles on electric power.
The range-topping Formentor uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 306bhp and 400Nm, and is mated to a four-wheel drive system. Performance figures are still to be confirmed, but expect a 0-62mph time around the five second mark.
Both range topping powertrains are mated to a dual clutch automatic gearbox controlled by a ‘shift-by-wire’ selector switch mounted on the centre console, though the 1.4 litre hybrid model uses a six-speed transmission compared with the 2.0-litre car’s seven-speed item. Those wishing to control the gears manually can use the steering wheel-mounted paddles.
Similarly, both these versions of the Formentor are offered with Cupra’s Dynamic Chassis Control system. DCC consists of adaptive dampers whose rate of response alters based on one of the four driving modes selected: Comfort, Sport, Cupra or Individual. The settings are selected via a button mounted on the steering wheel.
Elsewhere, the line-up will be propped up by a pair of familiar engines from elsewhere in the VW Group and indeed the SEAT line-up - a 1.5-litre TSI petrol four-cylinder sending 148bhp to the front wheels, and a 187bhp 2.0-litre petrol option. Not diesel Formentor has been confirmed.
