Hyundai's premium sub-brand Genesis has set up shop in Europe with the launch of the G70 saloon. It’ll go on sale in the UK early next year, where it will wade into a broad marketplace of established competitors, currently dominated by the BMW 3 Series, Alfa Romeo Giulia and Audi A4.
The Genesis G70 shares most of its mechanical components with the Kia Stinger, which means UK buyers will have access to the same range of engines as found in the Kia – albeit with slightly more power.
The entry-level model is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit with 251bhp and 353Nm of torque. The G70’s 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel model has an output of 199bhp and 440Nm of torque, while the flagship turbocharged 3.3-litre V6 engine (which is shared with the Stinger GTS) chucks out 368bhp and 510Nm of torque. The latter sends drive to all four wheels and has a built in drift mode, like you’d find on the new BMW M3.
Genesis has sold the G70 in South Korea since 2017, but the model that’s being launched in the UK is the facelifted variant. That means it’ll come with a suite of styling and technology tweaks, such as new slimline LED headlights, an updated front bumper, fresh alloy wheels designs and an updated rear diffuser with a twin exhaust tip.
Inside, there’s a new wireless smartphone charger, a 360-degree camera and a 10.25-inch infotainment system mounted in the centre of the dashboard, which offers support for over-the-air updates. Genesis has also swapped the Kia Stinger’s standard window glass for sound-insulating replacement panes.
However, the G70 won’t be the only new model Genesis will launch in the UK. The brand’s current line also comprises the G80 and G90 saloons, as well as the GV80 SUV – and we’re expecting further Genesis models will make their way west as part of the brand’s assault on Europe, potentially including cars that use the Hyundai Group’s new all-electric platform.
Hyundai recently announced it will launch three new pure-electric models under its new all-electric Ioniq spin-off brand – all of which will use the Group’s new E-GMP electric underpinnings. We expect Genesis will follow suit with upmarket versions of each new model, potentially providing new competition for the likes of Tesla and Polestar.
There’s no word yet on pricing for the new G70 – or even how Genesis models will be sold in the UK, but expect a separate approach to Hyundai and Kia with its own network of Genesis retailers.
