Peugeot has doubled up its all-new 308 line-up with the reveal of the 308 SW estate, which will arrive on roads towards the end of 2021 with plug-in hybrid power.

A rival for the Ford Focus Estate and the Volkswagen Golf Estate, the new Peugeot 308 SW is a more practical, load-carrying alternative to the sporty new 308 family hatchback, integrating that car’s design into a C-segment sized estate form factor.

To that end, most 308 SW buyers will be interested in the boot above all else. The length of the car grows compared with its hatchback styled sibling, to 4.64 metres (the hatch sizes in at 4.37 metres), and the longer overhang means that carrying capacity expands to 608 litres with the rear seats in place. That’s a figure quoted for internal combustion powered 308 SWs, and Peugeot has not revealed the impact of the battery and motor in plug-in hybrid versions of its new compact estate. However, if the hatchback is anything to go by expect a deficit of around 50 litres.

The rear bench folds in a 40:20:40 split, and can be done so by two buttons accessible via the boot. With the row folded flat, Peugeot claims up to 1,634 litres of space is on offer. Access is provided via an automatic tailgate, and the boot floor has two levels.

However, it’s not just the rear overhang that increases - the wheelbase is 55mm longer than the 308 hatchback as well. This should make the rear quarters feel more spacious for passengers sat back there, and to this end Peugeot claims that the SW variant comes with 129mm more knee room in the second row.

Up front, the 308 SW adopts the dashboard and infotainment revolution fitted on the hatchback with a total design overhaul compared with its predecessor. The angular new dashboard with its long, horizontal ventilation is headlined by a brand new 10-inch infotainment display running Peugeot’s new i-Connect Advanced software, with wireless connectivity for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. New ‘OK Peugeot’ natural language voice control is also found.

Running beneath the standard 10-inch screen is the new i-Toggle configurable digital switchgear panel, while fully-digital i-Cockpit instrumentation is equipped.

In terms of driver assistance features the 308 SW will be available with semi-autonomous driving assist from mid 2022. The Drive Assist 2.0 pack will combine adaptive cruise control with stop and go function with lane keep assist, while new capabilities include semi-automatic lane changing and automatic speed adaption for curves in the road.

The engine line-up kicks off with the pure petrol 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo PureTech 130, developing 128bhp and sending drive to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Diesel is also offered with the four-cylinder 1.5-litre BlueHDI unit, also developing 128bhp and sending drive to the front axle.

The two hybrid options offered on the 308 SW are front-wheel-drive and also make use of the EAT8 automatic transmission. The Hybrid 225 model combines a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine developing 178bhp with a 107bhp electric motor and a 12.4kWh battery pack. Maximum combined power stands at 222bhp, while Peugeot claims CO2 emissions as low as 26g/km. Up to 37 miles of all electric running is claimed, with a recharge taking just under two hours with optional 7.4kW charging.

The same specifications and charging technology apply to the less powerful Hybrid 180 model, which uses a 148bhp petrol engine and the same electric motor and battery combo for a maximum power output of 178bhp.
