Skoda is readying to launch its first electric SUV - the Enyaq iV - and these new official sketches give us our clearest look yet at the firm’s Volkswagen ID.4 sibling ahead of its official launch on 1 September.
When it goes on sale in 2021, the Enyaq will be Skoda’s first EV based on the VW Group’s new MEB platform made specifically for electric vehicles. It will rival the likes of the Kia e-Niro and Peugeot e-2008.
New 2021 Skoda Enyaq: design and interior
The images confirm that the Enyaq iV will draw plenty of inspiration from the Vision iV concept car revealed last spring. Some of the show car’s details, such as the slim headlights and rear-view cameras, will fall by the wayside for the production car, but the overall shape and dimensions (a footprint between that of a Karoq and a Kodiaq) remain familiar.
The top edge of the bold front grille dictates the shape of sharp creases along the bonnet; this angle then also continues into the deep front bumper and along the car’s flanks. The Enyaq does away with the iV’s coupé-like roofline in favour of a more practical squared-off shape – although we already know that a coupe-SUV version of the car is also in the pipeline. The rear tail-lights, meanwhile, bear a resemblance to those on the latest Octavia.
A second interior sketch also reveals that the production car’s dashboard design will take inspiration from the latest Octavia, while remaining true to the Vision iV concept, too.
We can see a small digital instrument panel, a two-spoke steering wheel taken from the Octavia, a dashboard with a large central area, home to a wide, 13-inch central infotainment display and a strip of piano-key style buttons, and a large centre console with a very small drive selector. Behind the instrument panel sits a projector for a head-up display with augmented reality features.
According to Skoda, the main difference between the interior of the Enyaq and the rest of the firm’s line-up is found in the material selection. It uses more natural, recycled and sustainably produced materials for various trim and upholstery elements, such as recycled PET bottle plastic for seat covering, and leathers tanned using extract from olive trees.

The firm’s interior designer, Norbert Weber, promises that customers will be offered several interior themes using sustainable materials, while Skoda has also claimed a boot size of 585-litres. Skoda has also said that the Enyaq will boast a “generous” amount of cabin space. The company says it’ll have a similarly sized cabin to the Kodiaq SUV, despite being shorter in length than the conventional Octavia hatchback.

Skoda has also released some additional information on the Enyaq’s platform and powertrain. We knew the pure-electric SUV was going to be based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB underpinnings – but Skoda has now confirmed that buyers will have their choice of rear- or four-wheel-drive, along with three battery sizes and five power outputs.
The entry-level model, called the iV 50, will have a 55kWh battery and a rear-mounted electric motor with an output of 146bhp. Skoda says it’ll offer around 211 miles of range. Above that are models with a 62kWh battery, badged iV 60, which get a more potent 177bhp electric motor on the rear axle and a range of 242 miles.
The largest battery on offer will be 82kWh, which can be had with rear or four-wheel drive. Skoda says top spec models will cover up to 310 miles on a single charge.

The Enyaq’s platform will offer support for the latest 125kW DC fast charging technology, which should allow the SUV’s battery pack to recover 125 miles of range in as little as 15 minutes.

Over the last few months, our spy photographers have Skoda’s Enyaq development mules undergoing testing – and these images offer a better indication of how the finished SUV will look, both inside and out.
We know the Enyaq is 4,648mm long, 1,877mm wide and 1,618mm tall - so about 5cm shorter than a Kodiaq. It will adopt a similar sloping roofline to the Vision iV concept, albeit raised up to improve the level of passenger and boot space. The rest of the Enyaq’s styling falls in-line with Skoda’s existing range of combustion-engined vehicles. It shares the same shape grille, headlight design and bumpers as the Karoq – along with an entirely conventional set of Skoda alloy wheels and familiar panel mouldings for the bonnet.

As the first Skoda model to be based on the MEB platform, the Skoda Enyaq will be a landmark car for the brand. It’s the next step in a Skoda plan to offer 10 electrified models (plug-in hybrid and fully electric) under the iV sub brand by the end of 2022, but it also uses tech that we’ll see in wide use across the VW Group in the coming years.
Skoda estimates that electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will make up 25 per cent of its sales by 2025 and hopes will be high for the Enyaq to realise a significant chunk of that total by slotting into the ever-popular SUV class.
