Genesis is gearing up for the launch of a new compact electric SUV, spied on camera for the first time as a potential rival for the Tesla Model Y.
It’ll be based on the Hyundai Group’s E-GMP platform for electric vehicles and could be badged GV60 if Genesis’s trademark applications are anything to go by. The production-ready GV60 will be revealed later this year.
Earlier in 2021 a Hyundai Group presentation to investors confirmed that Genesis would launch a compact electric SUV this year, being the second all-electric vehicle from the brand. It’s platform will be shared with the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, though the Genesis will be positioned as a more upmarket sibling to these models with a higher price tag, in keeping with the Genesis brand’s premium positioning in the market.
Compared with the boxy look of the Ioniq 5, the Genesis will instead be a coupe-inspired compact electric SUV, similar to the Kia EV6. This prototype has a similar sloping roofline, upswept tail, door panels and rising waistline to the Kia, but design inspiration, possibly from the Mint concept revealed in 2019, will make the Genesis distinct from its Kia sibling.
Genesis will fit its version of the car with new bumpers and its trademark ‘two lines’ LED headlights, which we can just make out under the cladding. The brand’s large, signature grille seen on its petrol and diesel-powered models will be blanked off due to the reduced cooling requirements of an EV as part of a more aerodynamically efficient front end.
As Genesis is the more luxurious arm of the Hyundai Group, we’re also expecting a plush interior makeover. Quilted leather seats, a new leather-trimmed steering wheel and recycled wood trim for the dashboard could arrive to transform the GV60 into a premium market player.

We expect the Kia EV6’s dual-screen infotainment system will be carried over, while the same basic dashboard architecture of the Ioniq 5 and EV6, with a long, flat centre console, will appear.
When it comes to battery and drivetrain options, Genesis will likely position the model as a sportier alternative to the Ioniq 5, owing to its coupe shape. As such, it will adopt the same selection of powertrains found in the similarly rakish Kia EV6.
It’s likely that a 77.4kWh battery will be standard, while electric motor options could range from a 226bhp single-motor set-up with over 300 miles of range to the same 577bhp all-wheel-drive arrangement as the range-topping Kia EV6 GT, which should provide a 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds and a maximum range of around 250 miles.
The E-GMP platform features an 800-volt electrical system, meaning that rapid charging speeds of up to 350kW are expected. A 10 to 80 per cent recharge of the 77.4kWh battery would take under 20 minutes at a fast enough charging point.
The Genesis GV60 is the next model in the Hyundai Group’s planned range of 25 new electric vehicles based on the E-GMP platform, all of which are due to be on sale by 2025. It’ll be joined by a production version of the Hyundai Prophecy in 2022 (Badged Ioniq 6), as well as the Ioniq 7 SUV in 2024.
