Mercedes has ramped up its plan to launch a fleet of new electric vehicles under its new EQ sub-brand, confirming a full-size EQS SUV, plus a mid-size EQE saloon and EQE SUV duo are in the pipeline.

These three additional vehicles will be based on Mercedes’ new large car Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA), which will make its debut on the EQS saloon in 2021. Mercedes claims the architecture is capable of accomodating a 100kWh battery that can deliver a range of up to 434 miles on a single charge.

No technical information has been issued on the EQS SUV or the pair of EQE models, but it's likely that a range of smaller battery options should be made available. This will help reduce overall cost.

The announcement comes as part of Mercedes’ new strategy to ‘enhance its luxury status’ and ‘raise the product portfolio’s positioning and mix.’

“We will unlock the full potential of our unique sub-brands – AMG, Maybach, G and EQ,” Ola Kallenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz said. “Our strategy is designed to avoid non-core activities to focus on winning where it matters: dedicated electric vehicles and proprietary car software.

Mercedes confirmed that it aims to double the output of its Maybach sub-brand and develop fully electric models, while electrified models in the AMG and G-Class line-ups will also be developed. “In addition, AMG, Maybach and G will go electric,” Kallenius confirmed.

A new fully electric architect designed for compact and medium-sized vehicles, called MMA, is also under development and will arrive in 2025. By 2030 Mercedes confirmed that the number of traditional combustion engine variants will fall by 70 per cent.
