The new Hyundai Tucson N Line is available to order in the UK now, with prices starting from £31,110. The new trim-level introduces a few sporty touches to the fourth-generation version of the brand’s mid-size SUV, becoming a rival for the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line.

Hyundai has separated the Tucson N Line range into two models. The standard N Line variant comes as standard with 19-inch alloy wheels, a reprofiled front bumper with larger intakes and a more aggressive rear diffuser with twin-exit exhausts. Buyers also get a new tailgate spoiler and a fresh radiator grille.

Inside, the sporty Tucson features the usual range of N Line tweaks, which includes an N-branded steering wheel, black headlining and a pair of sports seats trimmed in black suede and leather. The cabin makeover is completed with a set of aluminium pedals and unique treadplates.

Standard equipment includes heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Buyers also get Hyundai’s latest 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and infotainment system pairing, both of which have been loaded with N Line graphics to match the car’s badging.

The more generously equipped Hyundai Tucson N Line S is priced from £32,810 and adds three-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, an eight-speaker Krell audio system and an electric panoramic sunroof. There’s some extra safety equipment, too, such as a blind spot collision warning system and rear cross traffic alert.

From launch, just three of Hyundai’s five planned powertrains for the Tucson N Line will be available, all of which are based on the company’s turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and feature varying levels of electrical assistance.

The entry-level model features a pure combustion version of the 1.6-litre with an output of 148bhp and 250Nm of torque. Hyundai says that’s enough for a 0–62mph time of 10.3 seconds and a top speed of 117mph. The engine is only available with the firm’s new Intelligent Manual Transmission, which uses a 48-volt electrical linkage for the clutch.

Hyundai does offer a seven-speed automatic option, but the upgrade also adds mild-hybrid assistance. Two outputs are available; a front-wheel drive 148bhp variant which costs £33,275 and a four-wheel drive 178bhp model which is priced from £37,065.

Due to the gearbox, the former model’s 0–62mph time falls to 9.6 seconds, while the current most powerful car’s drops further to 9.0 seconds flat. The latter engine also increases the Tucson’s top speed to 125mph.

Later, Hyundai will also introduce a full hybrid model which blends the 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 59bhp electric motor and 1.49kWh battery pack, for a maximum output of 227bhp and 350Nm of torque. The powertrain will come with a six-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

At the top of the range, there’ll be a plug-in hybrid model. It’ll feature a 90bhp electric motor and a larger 13.8kWh battery pack, which will see performance rise to 261bhp and 350Nm of torque. Hyundai also says the PHEV Tucson should be capable of travelling around 31 miles on electric power alone.

There are a few options to choose from, too, including metallic paint and Hyundai’s Tech Pack which adds electronically controlled dampers, a 360-degree camera and a blind-spot camera feed. The latter option can only be fitted to the 180bhp Tucson N Line S.
