The all-new electric MG 5 estate is on sale in the UK now. Prices start from £24,495 after the Government’s £3,000 plug-in car grant has been applied – making it a cheaper alternative to the latest big-name electric family cars such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and Cupra el-Born.

Essentially the MG 5 EV is a badge-engineered version of the China-only Roewe Ei5 estate. It’s powered by the same 52.5kWh battery pack and front-mounted electric motor, which provides a maximum output of 154bhp and 260Nm of torque.

The powertrain offers 0–62mph in 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 115mph. Range, meanwhile, is 214 miles according to WLTP testing – but MG says this figure will climb to around 276 miles at lower speed in town.

When plugged-into a 50kW DC fast-charger, the MG 5 will recover an 80 percent charge in around 50 minutes. Using a conventional AC Wallbox charger, the EV will fully replenish its battery pack in around eight-and-a-half hours.

Boot space stands at 578 litres with the rear seats in place – which means there’s almost 200-litres more storage space on offer than the Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback. Fold the rear bench seat flat and the maximum amount of storage space swells to 1,456 litres.

The MG 5 EV range is separated into two trim-levels – Excite and Exclusive. Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights and rear parking sensors. Buyers also get a few bits of safety equipment, such as cruise control, a speed limiter and an electric parking brake with auto-hold function.

Inside, there’s air conditioning, a leather steering wheel, fabric upholstery and electric windows – along with a six-speaker stereo system, a seven-inch digital instrument cluster and an eight-inch infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The range-topping MG 5 EV Exclusive is priced from £26,995 and adds keyless entry, roof rails, automatic air conditioning, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and rain sensing wipers. The front seats get an upgrade too, with perforated leather upholstery, lumbar adjustment and a heating function.

MG will follow-up the launch of its electric estate with a plug-in hybrid version of the HS SUV in October this year. Once that’s on sale, MG will then set its sights on its most ambitious project yet – launching an all-new, four-wheel-drive, pure-electric, two-door coupe.

The company’s latest sports car is expected to reach the UK market in 2021. It was previewed in 2019 by the E-motion concept – and we expect the finished product will have a 0–62mph time of less than four seconds and a starting price of around £30,000.
