Our spy photographers have snapped BMW’s upcoming, pure-electric 3 Series ahead of its expected launch next year. When it reaches UK showrooms, the all-new EV will offer fresh competition for the Tesla Model 3, as well as Citroen’s upcoming flagship electric saloon.
This latest test mule is wearing a lighter camouflage, so we can glean little more information about the car’s styling. Cosmetic revisions over the standard 3 Series look to be minimal, with the mule sporting the smoother front bumper and tweaked rear end, which does away with the standard car’s exhaust cutout.
This mule also features slightly deeper side skirts, which help to hide the EV’s underfloor battery pack. Like the rest of BMW’s pure-electric models, the electric 3 Series will also receive a blanked-off radiator grille and a set of aerodynamically efficient alloy wheels – features that will help the car cut through the air more cleanly and boost its range.
It’s expected that BMW will transplant the powertrain found in the latest iX3 SUV into its upcoming electric saloon as both use a version of the same architecture. The system in the iX3 comprises a 282bhp electric motor and an 80kWh battery pack for a range in excess of 270 miles.
