It"s no surprise for a carmaker to confirm more and more of its products will be electrified, but it"s no less intriguing to hear it, not least when it involves sports cars. One of Nissan"s marketing bosses, Jean-Pierre Diernaz, has told Top Gear that around 40 per cent of the cars his company sells in Europe will be electrified by 2022. And that"s not just limited to Qashqais and suchlike. "I don"t see electrification and sports cars as technologies that are conflicting," Diernaz told us. "Maybe it"s the other way around, sports cars can benefit lots from electrification. At the end of the day, a motor and battery are much easier to move from one platform to another, from one sub-segment to another, than a full internal combustion set-up." We"ve known a little while the next GT-R is likely to be a hybrid, and Nissan"s move to Formula E is helping progress things.

So I’m guessing we will soon see VAT charged twice on electricity, just like petrol/diesel.

I'd say that's a pretty safe bet! :frown:

Unfortunately it's the way we are going to have to go in order to slow down our gradual trashing of the planet. I could live with an electric road car if I had to, but motor sport without internal combustion engines would take some getting used to.

As someone who does live with an electric car on a daily basis I’ll say it suffices.
But does it excite me in any way? No.
I don’t care how quick they can be, the smell, noise and feeling of a big V8 is unbeatable.

Well said! :thumb:

I was gutted enough when F1 went from normally aspirated screaming V8's to the current engines.
