Porsche has updated its duo of plug-in hybrid Cayennes, adding a larger battery pack that boosts all-electric running and efficiency.

Both the Cayenne E-Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid (both available in Coupe body styles, too) ditch the previous 14.1kWh battery in favour of a new 17.9kWh unit, which Porsche says increases electric-only range by around 30 per cent.

The Cayenne E-Hybrid uses a 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine developing 335bhp, in tandem with a 134bhp electric motor linked to the 17.9kWh battery. Total power stands at 456bhp (the engine and electric motor don’t produce maximum power at the same time), for 0-62mph in five seconds flat and a top speed of 157mph.

More important for many buyers though is the claim of up to 91.1mpg, CO2 emissions as low as 71g/km and 27 miles of emissions free running. Prices start from £69,980, with the coupe priced from £64,090.

The range-topping Cayenne S E-Turbo Hybrid sticks with the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine and single electric motor that combine to produce 671bhp. Porsche says 0-62mph takes 3.8 seconds and top speed is 183mph, while economy and CO2 stand at 74.3mpg and as low as 86g/km respectively.

With the new battery on board, the most powerful Cayenne’s electric range is enhanced slightly, up to 25 miles on a full charge. Prices start from £126,690, rising to £129,290 for the Coupe.

The plug-in Cayenne is available to order now, with prices starting from £67,128. That places it above the base model’s £55,965 but £1,202 beneath the marginally slower Cayenne S.
