This is the Volvo XC Coupe Concept, and there's a good chance this is what the XC90 will ultimately resemble.
Bound for next week's Detroit motor show, the concept is the second of three (remember the lovely Concept Coupe?) from the manufacturer's chief designer Thomas Ingenlath, and previews a brave new look for Volvo. It also shows us the waffly versatile SPA platform that underpins it, which'll slot underneath the XC90 first, then pretty much every Volvo bigger than the V40 (except the trucks. Obviously).
But this remains a concept. Which foists a few obligations on its designers. Chiefly, a mention of extreme sports. Inspired by POC (a company that develops high-tech protective gear for, you guessed it, extreme sports), Ingenlath says, "Several orange details and exterior graphics in combination with bold use of matte rubber mouldings, which cover the rear end of the car, add to the highly functional expression of the design,".
Concept frippery aside, imagine a slightly larger, slightly more overweight version with an extra set of doors and another row of seats, and you're looking at the XC90. Think it'll do well?
