At the New York Auto Show in April, Dodge unveiled the Challenger SRT ‘Hellcat'. Once we'd stopped giggling over how excellent the name was, we realised there were no exact power figures, only that it'd have ‘over 600bhp'.
Today, we learn this is true. The Challenger Hellcat has well over 600bhp. It has exactly 707bhp. Why? Because ‘Murica.
And because records are there to be broken. Yes, this new 707bhp Hellcat now becomes the most powerful production muscle car in the history of muscle cars.
More powerful than any ‘Vette in existence, including the new C7 Z06 (650bhp), and of course, more powerful than the supercharged V8-stuffed Shelby GT500 (662bhp).
The Hellcat's supercharged 6.2-litre V8 not only serves up 707bhp but also 650lb ft of torque, which is... handy. It's the first factory supercharged HEMI engine, and comes with two key fobs - red and black.
This is important. The black key fob limits the car's power to a piffling 500 horses, while the red fob unlocks the full tactical strike. As we found out in April, this new Hellcat gets a new eight-speed auto ‘box and interior inspired by the classic 1971 Challenger.
Now watch the most American trailer for an American muscle car ever. And if you're not saluting the stars and stripes by the end of it, we'd be rather disappointed.
