When I bought the Challenger I noticed that the rear tyres were about 50% worn and were Pirelli Scorpion's, generally considered a premium tyre.
The front were virtually new Falken's.
I was happy with this as it meant I knew I could probably finish the year without worrying about them.
But yesterday was an eye opener. At about 9:30am with the roads still a little damp I exited a roundabout at about 1/3 throttle and spent the new few seconds saw'ing the wheel left and right as I tried to correct the over-steer from the rea tyres losing grip. Now normally this is fun, when you expect it and you've actually provoked it. But in this case it was just a case of the tyres being overpowered, far too easily, and with the traction control switched on. Made me more than a little wary.
And then shortly afterwards, as I was braking into another roundabout, the fronts showed me how little grip they had too, as they just plowed on in a straight line. Now, you can expect a certain amount of understeer with a big heavy engine up-front but considering how gently I was driving after experiencing the rears struggling for grip, it should not have happened.
So now, I am going to replace all four. I prefer to match tyres across the axles anyway so having different front to rear was not my idea of good balance.
I have also found out I can run a square setup (match the front to the rear size wise) without any interference so I plan to run 275/40 r20 all round and I'm looking at a set of Toyo Proxes T1Sport tyres.
Fortunately, they have good reviews and are reasonably priced.
