Vuhl first strayed onto our radar a couple of years back when the 05" was announced. That car - a lightweight, track-only special offering similar thrills to Britain"s burdgeoning ranks of small, banshee track specials - hailed from Mexico. It was fast. This new one is even faster. And more powerful. And offers more bhp-per-tonne. It"s called, fittingly, the Vuhl 05RR, and has made its worldwide premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Full Throttle" and all thatSo, this new car gets a full carbon fibre body (where the old one got fibreglass panels), along with an aluminium-carbon monocoque that helps cut weight to 640kg (without any fluids). Then comes Ford"s 2.3-litre Ecoboost engine, here making a staggering 100bhp more than the standard 05"s 285bhp.That"s right, you"re looking at a 640kg car with a 385bhp turbocharged engine on board, with a six-speed sequential gearbox and rear-wheel drive, naturally. Then there"s that astonishing 600bhp-per-tonne power-to-weight figure. It"s all about power-to-weight, really. Why, you ask? How about 0-62mph in 2.7secs? Off the line that"d keep a Bugatti Chiron honest.Of course, it only tops out at 160mph, but we"d imagine that"d feel suitably supersonic in a car with no roof and a windscreen smaller than your smart phone. The centre of gravity has also been lowered by 50mm, and Vuhl has taken the wise decision of fitting a high-speed" steering rack. That, and lightweight, carbon fibre wheels, and a revised aero package over the 05, which takes in a new rear wing (stretching full width across the back) and F1-inspired" diffuser strakes. Lots of work was done at MIRA"s wind tunnel.
