- Covering: How satisfied owners are with their cars’ protective tech
- Winner: Volvo XC40

Cars are constantly advancing and surprising us with innovative new technologies, not least in that most vital area of design – safety.
Every mainstream car that’s sold in Europe goes through stringent tests by independent road safety body Euro NCAP. It provides an overall safety rating, as well as individual scores for adult occupant protection, child occupant safety, vulnerable road user protection and the presence of safety assistance features, such as autonomous emergency braking and lane-keep assist.
This year, the Volvo XC40 took first place in the Driver Power safety category. Naturally, the XC40 has a five-star Euro NCAP rating – as does every car in the safety top 10, including last year’s winner, the larger Volvo XC60, although it dropped down to eighth place this year.
The Subaru Outback came second in the category – its EyeSight suite of safety features no doubt played a part in this – while the Lexus RX rounded out the podium positions.
