Remember BMW"s Art Cars? We do. The whole project started in 1975 when French auctioneer and racing driver Herv Poulain commissioned Alexander Calder to paint the 3.0-litre CSL Poulain himself would race in the 1975 Le Mans 24Hrs. Since then, there have been no fewer than 17 Art Cars, most excellent and some quite odd. This is not a BMW Art Car. But it could be. It"s the one-off i8 Futurism Edition, and it"s quite excellent.Created by BMW Italy and Garage Italia Customs to celebrate 50 years of BMW in Italy, the paintwork is inspired by Italian artist Giacomo Balla. It"s his painting "Lampada ad Arco", which hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and supposedly represents "a street lamp powered by electricity under moonlight", that is replicated on this i8.Garage Italia Customs is the work of Lapo Elkann the, erm, eccentric grandson of Gianni Agnelli. Its other creations include a camouflaged Ferrari 458 and many Fiat 500s, among others. We can verify that the i8 does indeed stand out when it"s grey, let alone every colour on the visible spectrum. Such modifications aren"t always successful, but we quite like this one. Thoughts?
