Thunderstorms

Well, there are a few around at the moment!

Personally, I think they are awesome, although they are a bit annoying when they keep you awake at night. And I feel so sorry for pets or anyone frightened of them.

But the main reason for this post was to share this...

Real Time Lightning Map :: LightningMaps.or

It's a lightning tracker website where you can track lighting strikes in real time. There are settings and you can even see the thunder sound moving out after a strike. It's pretty accurate too! If you haven't seen it, it's fascinating.

Interesting stuff, surprising how many are going off around the world, like 400/min I saw.

I wonder how they measure it, I guess it much be from satellites as you couldn't get good coverage over the sea otherwise. Impressive. I'll bookmark that.

Wow that is impressive. We were supposed to get some where we currently are but thankfully none so far ??????

I think it uses a network of ground based detection stations. I'm pretty sure they use low frequency radio. You can hear lightning miles away - try listening between stations on AM/Longwave on a normal radio. There is a setting on the site to show where the detection stations are and even one to add lines showing which stations detected each lightning strike. Each station is presumably linked to the internet so it can update their server.

Yeah, seeing it over the sea is awesome. I was in the clifftop car park at Highcliffe in dorset once watching a thunderstorm at night years ago. That was insane.

Just feking heavy rain here at the moment :tsk:
