Volkswagen has confirmed that it is working on a new hi-tech, flagship model known as Project Trinity. No timeframe has been put on its arrival but bosses have confirmed that the vehicle will be highly autonomous, built on a bespoke EV architecture and made using a radical new production process.
The vehicle, previewed in a teaser image, has been described by VW’s CEO Ralf Brandstätter as “a highly efficient flat-seat concept with an iconic design - our innovation leader.”
Although completely hidden from view, it’s clear that Project Trinity will be a low-slung but incredibly wide vehicle. It’s almost certain that these visual traits have been made possible by the bespoke architecture on which the model will be based - expected to be an evolution of the MEB platform that underpins the recently launched ID.3.
Brandstätter described it as a “global toolkit champion” and that VW will be “taking the lead for a state-of-the-art flat-panel electrical platform”. He went on to say that VW is aiming to set new standards for electric vehicle range, charging speed, and digitalization, too.
VW also confirmed that Project Trinity will be a highly efficient Level 2 autonomous vehicle, but that the company will make it “Level 4 ready”. This level of automation allows drivers to completely hand over control to the vehicle, enabling it to operate steering, acceleration and braking without any driver intervention. However, there is currently no legislation that allows such a vehicle to be used on public roads.
Speaking on the prosecution of Project Trinity, Brandstätter added: “Wolfsburg is becoming a flagship for innovative, fully networked production processes. We will demonstrate that you can build innovative electric cars in a highly efficient and economical way not only in Berlin, but also on the shores of the Midland Canal."
