American sports cars are squishy and soft, right? Well, that"s what some of you internetists think. In reality, it turns out to be quite a different story.Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge are currently knocking it out of the park with cars that offer off-the-charts performance for not much cash. But which one is best? A good question, one we decided to try and answer by initiating Maximum Attack and heading to two of California"s best tracks. The cars in question are Chevy"s techno tour de force, the Corvette Stingray Z06, wearing the de rigueur Z07 upgrade package; the all-conquering Dodge Viper ACR, fresh from setting more than 10 outright lap records at circuits around the US; and the king muscle car of the year, the mind-warpingly awesome and hand-built Mustang Shelby GT350R.The tracks? We started off at The Thermal Club a snaking and pristine piece of tarmac set in the desert for rich types to thrash their toys around until the sun goes down and they retire to their on site condo for margaritas while minions work on their car.We, on the other hand, saddled up and ventured a few hours west to Willow Spring"s roller-coaster Horse Thief Mile circuit. A tight, twisty circuit offering a contrast to the high-speed stuff at Willow.Which car came out victorious? Well, you"ll have to read this story to find out. When you"re done, come back and treat yourself to some snaps from the gallery above to freshen up your desktop. All you have to do is click the full screen/make-it-big icon in the bottom-right of the gallery above, scroll through the picture that takes your fancy and then save the super hi-res image.
