The resulting tumble might be the worst crash you"ll ever see with survivors.The violence of the crash jars the viewer pretty hard. The moaning, slumped-over passenger looks very bad. The impact on the roof bent the rollbar to a severe angle. Both driver and passenger should consider themselves lucky to be alive. Roll cage cars aren"t meant to deform in a crash. If they did, you probably needed more roll cage. And if your head works well enough after the crash to see that the roll cage deformed, you should go buy a lottery ticket immediately.The rules for an upcoming 2017 Shift S3ctor event specify that any car exceeding 190 miles per hour must have "a mounted fire extinguisher, 4-point rollcage, and firesuit/jacket." The rule-writers add that they "highly suggest additional safety gear such as a HANS Device, full race suit, fire suppression system, and full cage."Given the extreme violence of the crash, we find the list of "suggested" gear is pretty reasonable. It"s worth noting that a HANS Device only works with a correctly installed five- or six-point harness also.If you recreated that crash 100 times with the same safety gear, we"re not sure you"d get that good of a result most of the time. Even in a perfect run, most professional racers will tell you that things can go wrong.
