and I have family in the area.
I couldn't imagine what it would be like in an earthquake. What sort of protection do properties get in earthquake prone areas like San Francisco? is it like an Anderson shelter in the yard?

We have experienced an earthquake - whilst in the dominican republic a few years ago. Its, um, interesting.
There is very little protection. In SanFrancisco, the city is built on a surface that basically liquifies when shaken. effectively the ground becomes so soft that even gas pipes running through fracture!
Not a pleasant experience.
