Spotted Day van in Southamoton

Spotted this van near Southampton football club today. Looked fairly tidy as I drove past.

When i drove past again it looked like lacquer is flaking off.

Lacquer peel (or paint herpes as it is sometimes known!) seems to be a common problem with GM metallic paints of the '80s and '90s in particular. No idea why. I have lacquer peel on my rear spoiler and the tops of my mirrors, but that's all, fortunately.

Sarah saw a 1998 Firebird on eBay that has been sitting in the sun in the states for many years, very poor condition, same paint effect.

I think its less of a problem and more of a maintenance failure.......

I'm not so sure... I lack of maintenance wouldn't help but it seems it can still happen even with regular polishing and waxing.

If the paint finish is kept waxed and prevented from drying out it won't happen. It's just neglect.
