This week"s Throwback Thursday video features a commercial for the 1986 Chevrolet Camaro featuring famous singer Tony Curtis. General Motors made a bunch of commercials for the 1986 Camaro, but in most of them, they offered the viewer a good look at their lineup whereas this video really doesn"t tell us anything about the Camaro at all.The video begins with a woman in a set of coveralls walking through a dusty warehouse of cars under covers. She explains that this room is where they keep the "pretenders" cars that "wanted to be like the legend". As she closes the door, she explains that the legend in question is the Chevrolet Camaro and that these other cars didn"t have the "Style" of the Camaro. If you look closely at those covered cars, it is hard not to see the headlight buckets of the 1986 and earlier "fox body" Mustang.According to this mysterious woman, this lack of style allowed the Camaro to be the bestselling sports coupe of the 1980s, and as she finishes saying that up rolls a brand new 1986 Camaro IROC-Z.An IROC Z that is being driven by singer Tony Curtis, who asks you why you would want to "settle for a pretender, when you can drive a legend".Sure, the video is a little odd now, especially since most people buying a Camaro today couldn"t name a Tony Curtis song, but I"m told that back in the 1980s, having Curtis appear in the Camaro would have drawn some big attention in the advertising world presumably from the older new car buyer. More importantly to those buyers who didn"t care about Tony Curtis, this ad takes a subtle shot at the Ford Mustang while reminding us all who sold the bestselling sports coupe of the 1980s.
