Vehicle Badging

What is it with inappropriate badging used by Vehicle manufacturers?
Take this BMW for example.
A 2.0L diesel 5 door calling itself a GT.
GT cars are traditionally 2 seat, 2 door coupes with large engines, and just enough space for two adults and their toothbrushes. They cover continents consuming fuel at an alarming rate and are about the pleasure of driving. Where's the pleasure in looking like every other POS on the road, sounding like a Massey Ferguson with the contraception failures in the back seat asking "are we there yet" every 5 mins. And you don't even have regular fuel stops to look forward too where you might be able to leave the little bast**ds in a garage loo!!

GT car? No way despite BMW's stupid marketing and fools that buy them!!

Nice Rant....

Yeah I know what you mean.

Not so much to do with badging but my pet hate is when manufacturers call four door cars 'coupes'. A coupe by definition has two doors. Mercedes-Benz started it with the CLS.

Mercedes-Benz keep getting things wrong in their advert too. About 10 years ago, they advertised their car was the first car in the world with a retractable hard top. I guess they knew nothing 60's Ford Thunderbird's.

isn't coupe to do with the fact it has a sloping back not howe many doors

After a very quick web search I found the following quote:

A coupé (US coupe) (from the French past participle coupé, of the infinitive couper, to cut) is a closed two-door car body style with a permanently attached fixed roof,[1] that is shorter than a sedan or saloon (British and Irish English) of the same model,[2] and it often has seating for two persons or with a tight-spaced rear seat.

^ Well found!

A coupe doesn't necessarily have to have a sloping rear window. Some coupes, particularly older American coupes from the '70s and '80s, have a near vertical rear window.

I would call a four door car with a sleek roofline like the Mercedes CLS a 'fastback saloon', but 'fastback' is a quite old-fashioned term that you don't hear so much these days.

Never seen on of them before.

In the years i worked as a volvo mechanic i saw 3 and that was 1986-1999...very hard to get hold of then and these days sadly what comes up for sale is either pristine or delivered in a dustpan

Always good to dangle a carrot now and again to see who bites. :fish2: :whistling:

You are the guru of info. Much appreciated. :)

Well as this is fast becoming a volvo two door tribute page,,,here is another one,,,,,

No gold start though for the film its from.....it's a bit too easy

We've gone off on a massive tangent here and I don't know when to stop so here's a soft top 262C that I saw at Techno Classica earlier this year....

Back on inappropriate badging... Peugeot has built some cracking GTIs but who remembers when they inexplicably applied the GTI badge to the 505?:
