I think it is just a donation for the show, it used to be totally free. They have a bucket on the gate to put some coins in to.
The acceptance on the day could be due to how full they think they will get. The overflow carpark thay may direct you too has some great cars in there too, like another car show. That is a pay&display car park that I believe is £5 for the day.
