S60 vs 12bolt

I'm doing some PCB work for a company who has contacts in Florida, and has mentioned about getting any parts I need shipped to them and they will get it to me at a reduced rate.

So I contacted Carl, and see if they can ship to Florida, a possibility of free shipping at the mo too.

So sorry for the geographical error! If ordered before the end of the week I might be able to get free shipping to Florida,(not promising but willing to try).

The S60 gear ratios available are 3.54, 3.73, 4.10, 4.30 and up. The 3.91 is not available.

Unless You could find a used set of brake backing plates stateside to send to Strange the axles and bearings would need intalled when Your S60 arrived in the UK. It is not a difficult task but does require a bearing press.

Pricing is $2299.00 for the S60 with the S-Trac or Tru Trac posi unit. The Strac is mfg by Strange and is 8 lbs lighter and is the one I suggest using.

Your driveshaft will need shortened and a conversion u-joint used or replaced.

Strange offers a ready for paint and installation 3" chromemoly tubed driveshaft electronically balanced with 1350 u-joints and trans slip yoke for $318.00.

If I can answer any more questions please let Me know.

Thank You,
Carl

Dave, what's you thought's on S-Trac diff? It looks like a Helical type arrangement, similar to the original GM diff the car came with, no special friction modifiers required. I like the look of the design, but I've not made good choices in the past.

Bowing for worthy words by ya master....:hail:

Looking forward to this day again:burnout:burning that rubber...

Thanks. :)

Wow, nice design with the helical gears

All enclosed unlike the stock GM ones.
Also I like the housing, adjustment to not have to have shims. This looks like top notch stuff. Awesome.
The more I read the more I like.

Hows the battle with intermittent tech?

I'm with you, no clutches, no shims. sounds greats.
As for what your car came with, didn't it have clutches from the factory? - I thought they all did except the Hawk which was an Auburn unit.

As for choice - I suspect the posi would be more streetable and quiet, easier to live with. The s-trac would probably be more harsh and I imagine noisier in operation. As they are the same price, and given your HP level, I would go s-trac.

YMMV

No clutches from factory. I dont have a good photo of it, well I have a photos of me taking the old diff out, but its unclear in the helical gear area, but I do have it in the garage still for some reason, more of a trophy, lol. I certainly remember the helical gears., and the bearing at one end sheared off. opps.

Thanks for your opinion on the S-Trac, I will go that route. I don't mind a bit of extra noise at the rear, I have loads of noise everywhere else.

My original diff the car came with.

In the car it dosn't look too bad.

humm, opps, that would explain the noise.

Gear Choice.

The rear end originally was 3.42 gears. I changed to 3.91 at the last diff upgrade. This gave me better acceleration and didn't impact too much on motorway revs/speed, think I done around 1600rpm @ 70mph, cant be sure, I can check data logs. I didn't want to go 4.10's as I heard you are revving higher on the motorway.

Well, The Stange S60 dosn't come with a 3.91 choice or close to. Comment from Carl
The closest gearset to a 3.91 is a 3.89. It is a problematic gearset and Strange will not use it. The 3.73's are known to be an excellent choice and are by far the most popular.
The S60 gear ratios available are 3.54, 3.73, 4.10, 4.30 and up.

So 3.73's are closer to 3.91's than what they are to 3.42's so I still should have better acceleration than stock. This may actually work out better for 0-60mph times, previously(3.42's) 2nd would take me to 70mph(rev limit) the 3.89's take me to about 55mph. So 3.73's should take me to 60 in 2nd.

I think 3.73's will be a good choice, what does any one else think?

The general consensus for the 4th gen f-body is 3.73:1 for the a4 and 4.10:1 for the m6.

I went 3.73:1 with an m6 but only because my carrier was a 2 series. That said I would probably go 3.73 as it made 1st gear quite short in my opinion and with 4.10's you spend virtually no time in 1st making it almost redundant.

Great, thanks. 3.73's it is :)

Thats good to know. I wonder if its worth getting that shipped with the axle, it cant add much weight to the box. Axle weighing 300lbs, box is 5ftx2ftx2ft including drive shaft.

Looks like someone on Ls1Tech had the watts fitted to an S60, Strange s60 and fays2 watts link - LS1TECH shame there is no pics. I like piccys.
