Thanks for that. I'm hoping it's something that simple and nothing more expensive as the Campervan MoT is due next week and I need to get some work done on the Beetle engine. ?
I agree. Chances are the battery has probably got weak from the cold as Dave says. The clicking you can hear is the starter engager solenoid firing/pulsing but there isn't enough current to turn the starter. Jump starting can be used for diagnosis - if it starts with a jump, it's most likely just a flat battery. But if it still just clicks, as Dan says, there is probably a battery or starter connection issue.
Thanks everyone. I'll try and jump start it and, hopefully, that will cure the problem. I really need to get out and drive it more during the winter months.
I put the GP in for MOT last Thursday and they aborted the test because a metal brake pipe had corroded and failed. It was the worst one to access too...right behind the front crossmember, accross the tunnel to the OS front. All replaced with a new pipe now for re MOT this week hopefully. You can see where the old one had perforated on the right in this picture!...

That's a good point .
In the case of that section of brake pipe (which was made of steel as they mostly are), the weather could get to it but it couldn't actually be seen... even from under the car!
