What have you done to your vehicle today?

Thanks Chris and AT for the info in Holleys Vs Edelbrocks. The concencus on the web seems to be that an Edelbrock will run better out of the box, but that a Holley can be easier to tune and fettle with. But as we know, much on the web should be taken with a pinch of salt. Information directly from those who have done it wins if you ask me.

It's a 305 and is an 82, so the first year of the 3rd Gens. Could there have been some overlap of carbs used during production? I've got a Haynes manual somewhere, I will try to dig that out. Maybe it will say what the original carb was. A Rochester possibly?

It would have been a Rochester. 600 is likely to big for a 305. It will work of course but it’s too big.
Is it a squarebore or spreadbore manifold? The Holley is squarebore so if it’s a spreadbore manifold there will be an adapter plate.

If a Holley is easier to tune then it’s probably just as well considering it never stayed in tune in my experience.
I don’t recall the Edelbrock being hard though and I went right inside changing jets and metering rods.

Of course! It’s a 2nd gen T/A and it has the best lines of any car ever built! ?
Absolutely!!! Don't tell my 3rd gen but I would have one if I could afford the right one!
Say no more....

Here is the engine bay and carb. I am moderately embarrassed by the engine bay. It did look cleaner than this, but that was some years ago!

So a 60deg V with a squarebore manifold.
That carb looks more than a little tired. Definitely time for a rebuild or a new Edelbrock.
Thanks for the identification. You were right, the Haynes shows the original carb option models as E2SE, E4ME and E4MC...Rochester numbers! (y)
I agree re my carb, it does look pretty knackered! I have cleaned it externally and took out the accelerator pump. The diaphragm feels like chewing gum and I can see light through it! ?
So yep...overhaul time! ...

I rebuilt my Rochester carb with a rockauto kit lasted about a year carb old and worn so got a remanufactors unit from summit all set up bolted on fired straight up 300quid from memory all in.

Good point. Might be false economy rebuilding this Holley .

holley loads of bits in summits catalog. edelbrock one box of bits gives all you need to tune it. or EFI plug it in and it tunes itself

Just to try and get it running and stop the fuel leak, I have ordered an accelerator pump diaphragm, will go from there.
Oh, and some more high gloss jet black, sanding discs and a spray suit.

Are you not working today?
I'm at my desk ready for the 10am skype call, followed by thd 10.30 one, then the 11 oclock one before the midday one, then a 3pm one with the USA guys. I will get some work done, buy sadly not on the car until after 5pm.

Yes, unfortunately. I don't work in a vital industry but I can't work from home and there is mostly only me in, or just my boss sometimes, so social distancing isn't a problem...when my boss remembers and doesn't keep wandering towards me while he is talking!
The stuff I have ordered probably won't arrive until later this week, so Friday afternoon will probably be my next hit on the Firebird.

Washed mine too
